Ophthalmologists are medical doctors that deal with the diseases and problems of the eye. These physicians have more training in more complex eye diseases and can do surgery on the eyes when necessary. A number of different eye symptoms can occur that should prompt you to call your eye doctor to determine if a serious condition exists.

#1 – Double Vision
Double vision, medical name diplopia, occurs when the eyes show two simultaneous images of a single object. The displacement of the image can be horizontal, vertical or diagonal. It can be caused by a number of serious diseases that affect the muscles and nerves that control the eyes.

#2 – Flashes of Light
Flashes or light at the sides of the eyes often occur along with floaters in the eye. This symptom, called photopsia, can mean that a small tear may be occurring in the retina. Flashes of light can signal an impending retinal detachment. If you experience a sudden increase in light flashes, see your ophthalmologist for an evaluation.

#3 – Haloes Around Objects
A gradual increase in the amount of haloes that surround lights and objects in your field of vision could mean cataracts. You should contact your eye doctor for an assessment and possible surgery.

#4 – Curtain Blocking Vision
If you suddenly have a problem with your vision as if a curtain is falling over your field of vision, contact your ophthalmologist immediately. This could be a symptom of retinal detachment that can threaten your vision.

#5 – Pain in the Eye
Eye pain can mean simple fatigue, strain or even sinus problems. Sudden, sharp pains in the eye can be caused by infection or other conditions. If the pain persists, you should call your ophthalmologist for an appointment to evaluate the problem.

#6 – Bulging of An Eye
Any sudden bulging appearance in the eye should be brought to the attention of your ophthalmologist immediately. Thyroid gland disorders can cause swelling and scarring of tissues and muscles around the eye.

#7 – Increased Number of “Floaters”
Most people develop “floaters” in their eyes as the years pass. These spots, threads or squiggles often develop in the eye in the normal process of aging. However, if the number or size of the floaters suddenly increases, you should make an appointment with your ophthalmologist to determine if a problem has developed that could be serious.

#8 – Discharge From the Eyes
A discharge coming from the eyes can mean an infection in the surface layers or a more serious problem deep within the eye socket. Consult with your ophthalmologist about treatment for this condition.

#9 – Diabetes
People who have been diagnosed with diabetes must pay particular attention to any problem with their eyes. Diabetes is associated with a higher risk of retinal detachment and blindness. Any change in your vision should be brought to the attention of your ophthalmologist.

#10 – A Family History of Eye Disease
If someone in your family has had a serious eye disease, you should get your eyes checked regularly by an ophthalmologist to ensure that any problem is caught early. Your ophthalmologist can advise you on schedule of examinations that will best protect your vision.
